    FIRST TO WORST
The most remarkable development of this week's pool is the plunge of Dave "Lakewood Lancers" Coher. Perhaps he took to long a moment to gloat, because he went from an awesome 9 correct picks in week one to a less stellar 6 this week. It was worst to first, tying with Scott "Hail to the Redskins" Rubush for last place on the week.

But Coher's impressive showing in week 1 still keeps him at the top of the heap, just one point behind Cris "Houston Headhunters" AKA Jobless in Jersey. Over the course of two weeks, she's had the most consistently solid performance -- and so she stands alone in first place.

The most impressive performance of the week, though, goes to Joe "Steel Man" Pesce, who racked in 10 victories. He's also just one point out of first, and he claims that in week one, he didn't realize we were using the spread (must have missed that incessant debate). If that's right, he could be the one to watch.

Kudos also go to Jason "Viva Las49ers" and Shadowalker, who both put in an impressive 9 correct picks.

And so I fared a little less well, hauling in a meager 7. It's still a major improvement after my week 1 debacle, and it was good enough to beat Coher and and Rubush. Nonetheless, I continue to linger among the bottom of the pack, above only the three flakes (4th and Ten, Sepultribe, and the Steel Doormat) who forgot to put in their picks this week. (I highly recommend instructing Yahoo! to send you reminders.)

But the season is still young, and I, like the Patriots, will rally. (OK, so Bledsoe is injured, but hope springs eternal.)

    Till next week,

    A PRAYER

Below is a special prayer in response to today's horrific events from Bud Macfarlane Jr., founder of CatholiCity. Please pray it and pass it along:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit...

    "Dear Father Almighty,

As we mourn for all the souls who died today in the attack, many of whom woke up this morning with no prayer or thought of You on their hearts, we ask You to extend the full portion of Your Mercy on their souls. We also beg of you to send the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, into the lives of their surviving relatives and friends. You, Father, and You alone, have the power to bring good out of evil.

We humbly implore you to guide the hands, feet, and minds of all rescue workers and police and fire workers who are responding to this crisis at this very moment. Protect them. Enlighten them. Help them save lives.

We ask, too, Almighty One, that You extend a blanket of divine protection on the United States at this critical time. Guide our leaders, especially President Bush, and all sovereign nations who are our friends, and place them under the special mantle of the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady, who is the patroness of our country.

We ask all of this in the Holy Name that is Above All Other Names in Power and Glory and Love and Mercy; in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, our brother, and Our Savior.

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in the day of battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, pray for us.
Saint Katharine Drexel and Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, pray for us.
Saint Thomas More, Patron of Politicians, pray for us.
Saint Joseph, Patron Saint of Canada, pray for us.
Immaculate Mary, Patroness of the United States, pray for us.
Jesus Christ, King of Kings, we adore you!"

    AMEN.

    WEINKOPF.COM FOOTBALL POOL UPDATE
I still haven't quite recovered from yesterday's drubbing.

Having abstained from football-viewing during the 1999-2000 season, I find myself on the bottom of a very steep learning curve this year. How the heck did the Chargers, Saints, and Panthers get so good? When did Pittsburgh and Washington get so very bad?

And is it possible that my beloved New England Patriots have sunk this low? They lost by six points to the dismal Cincinnati Bungles -- and the game wasn't even as close as the score suggests. Gulp. It really doesn't get any uglier than this.

To make matters worse, I showed my solidarity with the Pats by performing every bit as badly as they did on the Weinkopf.com Football Pool.

Thank you, ShadowWalker and my brother-in-law Bob, AKA 4th and 10, for putting in performances almost or as bad as mine -- it's not quite so lonely at the botton. And kudos to David Coher AKA Lakewood Lancer, who has racked up 8 wins as of Sunday, dominating the field. Cristina AKA Houston Headhunters, who has all the time in the world to scrutinize game film, and Stacey Pressman AKA ClevelandDawg also made impressive showings.

The rest of the group fell into the mediocre category -- somewhere between Coher's dominance and my ineptitude. Thanks to all of you -- your medicority gives me something to aspire to.

It looks like a long, ugly season, folks, for my team and my picks alike. But wait -- there's always next week to turn things around, right?
